Abstract Explorations Series, 2018
Oil pastel, 10 x 12 inches

Series of small format oil paintings created daily during her residency at Joya in Spain. These series bring attention to the simplicity of the landscape through vivid colors and forms. The land, nature and man-made architecture become visual references to explore feelings about home and a sense of belonging to a landscape.

Smoky sky and sooty ground bridged by a concrete blaze: peaked roofs and jutting walls coloured like flames.

Tiled colours alternate between roaming curve and rigid angle, fixing a bright orb within a boxy frame, then spilling back down over the verge.

Scorched desiccation, rasping and fragile, traversed by layered flows, molten, then cooling to glossy hardness, fractured by a branching cleft

Abrupt peaks reach with longs arms, circumscribing. Two slabs captured by their embrace, stand indifferently, together but apart.

Building block walls— planes of colour stacked end on end. One slab upturned, protruding, interrupting space and light, painting the ground with shadow.

Hurricane sunset— spiral bands rotate around a fiery core, then unfurl sending ribbons across the sky, and tracing the edges of the mountains, already bathed in shadow.
